Course Summary

Gain confidence in painting and drawing with Cape Verdean visual Artist and Poet, Mito Elias.  Take the first steps toward drawing confidently by using the design elements and principles to achieve a personal visual solution. Mito will introduce you to the basic skills of tone, proportion, texture and rendering while encouraging you to develop your personal expression. Explore hand-eye coordination and visual perception and generate a wide range of techniques using grey lead and coloured pencils.

Learn the technical application of watercolours or acrylic paints and develop a personal art response through innovative exploration and experimentation with ideas, concepts and the painting medium. Learn new skills for achieving desired effects through realistic or abstract representation while progressing your personal techniques.

This course is excellent for developing a folio of work or for beginners just starting to paint and draw.

Topics covered include:

– drawing design elements (line, shape, colour, texture etc) 

– drawing designn principles (rhythm, movement, balance etc)

– how to mix paint and colour to achieve a desired effect

– using brush and palette knife to achieve realistic textures

– how to block in composition before painting

– understanding light source and how it effects rendering of different objects.

About Artist Mito Elias

Born in the archipelago of Cape Verde, Mito Elias studied art in Arco – Lisbon - Portugal. He has lived and worked in the diaspora since 1989, developing an original imagery language consisting of the search for Creole oral traditions and tales, a symbiotic style between wash, writing and multimedia, he has thus named as Mare Calamus. Since 1983 Mito Elias has regularly presented his exhibits, work drawn, painted, written or videographed. He is represented in many an exhibition all over the world, deserving special mention of the following:
Mundial Bank - USA, BNU – Macao, Afro Brazil Museum - São Paulo - Brazil, Regional Government of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, Presidency of the Cape Verde Republic, Embassy of Cape Verde in Lisbon, and Ethnic Communities' Council of Victoria, Australia.   Elias has lived in Melbourne, Australia since 2013, working as a Visual Arts Tutor at FCAC and developing an arts concept which he has called FANDATA.

Please bring to class:

– 2B graphite pencil

– A3 sketchbook

– Regular white eraser

– metal pencil sharpener

– Tubes of acrylic paints in the following colours: red, blue, green, yellow, black, white.

– Impasto medium, gloss gel medium (but not Impasto Gel medium) for acrylic paints

– 2 plastic spatulas

– 4 brushes – a selection of round, flat, etc. – synthetic or bristle

– 4 painting boards (20 x 30cm)

– Palette & plastic jars or similar size containers (empty)

– Rags
