Authors suitable for students taking their initial steps in reading original Latin are chosen. Texts are selected by the teacher in consultation with the class. In the past some authors studied have been Caesar, Cicero, Virgil, Ovid and Horace.

By the end of this course students will:

• have the ability to read and understand original Latin prose and/or poetry with some facility.
• develop knowledge of the rhetorical and linguistic features of Latin in the original.
• extend their knowledge and understanding of advanced features of Latin grammar.
• understand some of the themes and/or historical background of Latin literature.

It is recommended that students have approximately 400-hours of previous language study or have equivalent language knowledge (four to five years of prior Latin study).
