Liberal Arts is a broadly based humanities course, which covers areas such as literature,
history, civics, environmental issues and economics as well as communication (including information technology)
and study skills. It aims to develop an understanding of some of the major issues and ideas of modern society.
An alternative pathway to University for adults returning to study.

Where this course might take you
Successful completion of the first year of the Diploma may lead into the first year of an Arts
degree at University. Students who complete the full Diploma are able to negotiate credits for the first
year of an Arts degree with most universities, or may gain entry into an education degree. Students
who complete the Diploma and gain entry into Victoria University will be exempt from the first year of

What you will learn
The skills and knowledge covered in this course are applied when studying at a university specifically when
studying the humanities or allied disciplines. The course focuses on assisting students understand the nature
of study in a tertiary education environment and the skills involved in learning in this environment.
- Develop knowledge and skills for personal life and the needs of industry
- Develop communication skills and self confidence in tertiary study and/or the workplace
How long is the course?
Two years full-time (or part-time equivalent)
Certificate IV in Liberal Arts is awarded after one year of full-time study (or part-time equivalent)
Entry Requirements
You are eligible to apply for the diploma if you:
- have satisfactorily completed Year 12 or an approved equivalent; or
- can demonstrate a capacity to study at tertiary level.
Credit may be given in recognition of prior learning.
