Here are 5 tips on how to learn a language online:
1. Make sure you have a comfortable space to learn
The great thing about studying online is that you can study from anywhere! However, it’s important that your study area is a comfortable learning space so that you can be as engaged and productive as possible.
As we head into winter, it’s a nice treat to be able to study with your slippers and blanket, snug on your couch. But it’s also important to limit any distractions and give yourself the best chance to focus and concentrate on your learning. Make sure you have a dedicated study space, and your weekly study time will also be your “me time”. Set yourself up in quiet space away from TVs, noise and interruptions.
2. Stay in study mode
One of the benefits of learning online is the convenience of studying without having to leave the house. Although, sometimes, your commute can serve as your time to “get in the zone” for study.
It could be a good idea to give yourself 15 minutes before class to ease your mind into classroom mode – refresh yourself on the last week’s content, and some of the key words and phrases you have learned so far.
If you find yourself struggling to switch on initially, remind yourself why you chose to study this course, and how exciting it will be to have a new language to speak, read and comprehend.
3. Don’t be afraid to speak up
CAE’s online language classes are designed to replicate the same experience you would get from learning in person. You’ll have the same classroom experience, just virtually – so don’t be afraid to participate (and have your camera on), speak up or raise your hand at any time!
While daunting at first, you’ll build the confidence to share your ideas in class with the support of your teachers and fellow students.
4. Be technology ready
There are not many feelings worse than being late to class! Before you sign in, make sure your computer and internet are all ready to go.
It’s a good idea to do a test call before you start to make sure that your camera, microphone and internet connection are study-ready. If you’re using a laptop or portable device that won’t be connected to power, make sure your battery is fully charged.
5. Explore the culture
Learning a new language is more than just learning new words and phrases – you’re introducing yourself to a whole new culture.
Make the most of your learning outside of your online classes and immerse yourself in the media of your language. By watching movies and TV, following the news and listening to music from the area of your language, you’ll be surprised at the things you pick up on!
