A lot of people think creativity is something you’re either born with it or you’re not – a kind of magical talent reserved for the “artistic”. But being creative isn’t about perfection, natural ability or producing a masterpiece. It’s about taking small steps into something new, letting yourself play and discovering what happens when you give your imagination room to breathe.

If you’ve ever wondered what you can do to be more creative, the answer is simpler than you think: you start. And one of the easiest ways to start is in a supportive, hands-on class at the CAE.

Our art short courses are designed for people of all experience levels – whether you’re a total beginner or are rediscovering your creative side. If you’re curious about drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking or digital art, you’ll find a welcome space to explore your creative voice.

Why creativity matters

Creativity isn’t just about making art. It’s a way of thinking – a mindset that helps you solve problems, express yourself and see the world differently. If you’ve ever asked yourself “why is it important to be creative?” or “how can I be more creative in everyday life?”, the answer lies in practice.

Being creative builds confidence. It strengthens your ability to improvise, experiment and trust your instincts. It helps you slow down, focus and reconnect with your imagination. And most importantly, it reminds you that you’re capable of learning something new – no matter your age or starting point.

Taking your creative first steps

If you’re wondering where to start, a structured class can make all the difference. Apps and online videos are great for inspiration, but they can’t replace the experience of being in a room with real people, real materials and an expert teacher who can guide you moment by moment.

The CAE’s art short courses offer exactly that. Many students arrive thinking they can’t draw or can hardly pick up a paintbrush, only to discover that their creativity grows when they’re using the right tools and are given encouragement and space to experiment. You don’t need to know how or where to begin – that’s what we’re here for.

What you’ll discover about yourself

Art has a way of revealing things you didn’t know you were capable of. As you practise, you might notice things like:

You become more observant. Drawing and painting teach you to slow down and really take in what you see – light, shape, colour, texture. You’ll be surprised how this shift in attention spills into your everyday life.

You gain confidence through experimentation. Mistakes become part of the process. Art helps you learn to try, adjust and try again – an empowering skill that strengthens creative thinking in all areas of your life.

You realise you need more time to play. Adults don’t get many chances to experiment without pressure. Trying your hand at art will give you permission to explore, improvise and rediscover the joy of making something with your hands.

You can still surprise yourself. Many students find that once they start, they want to keep going – exploring new mediums, new ideas and new ways to feel creative.

You don’t need to be “born with it”. You don’t need experience. You just need curiosity and a willingness to take that first step.

Whether you’re looking to finally explore what your creative side feels like or rediscover your creativity, our short courses are the perfect place to begin.
