Course Summary

The urinary catheterisation short course offers a blend of online self-directed learning and practical skills workshop. This course is aimed at Registered and Enrolled Nurses who wish to refresh their skills to ensure safe practice. At the successful completion of the course you will have the skills and knowledge to confidently insert, remove and manage male, female and suprapubic catheters.

Course Content:

  • anatomy and physiology: a brief review of the urinary system relevant to catheterization
  • aseptic technique: principles of infection control and sterile procedures
  • female catheterization: step by step demonstration and practice of female urinary catheter insertion
  • male catheterization: step by step demonstration and practice of male urinary catheter insertion
  • suprapubic catheter overview: introduction to suprapubic catheter types, care, and basic management principles
  • catheter selection and sizing: understanding different catheter types and sizes
  • troubleshooting and complications: recognizing and managing potential complications
  • patient comfort and dignity: emphasizing patient centered care and communication
  • practical skills lab: hands on practice with simulation models

Upon enrolment, you will receive access to our online learning modules, which include approximately five hours of self‑directed study covering all core catheterisation topics. After completing the online component, you will attend a 2.5 hour practical lab workshop, where you will develop and practise catheter insertion and management skills under the guidance of experienced Registered Nurses.

Please Note: this course is designed to provide basic knowledge and practical skills. It does not provide formal certification or replace the need for accredited training where required.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • demonstrate sound knowledge of urinary system anatomy and physiology
  • safely perform male and female urethral catheterisation
  • safely manage and care for male, female and  suprapubic catheters
  • select and prepare appropriate catheter equipment
  • manage complications and troubleshoot issues
  • apply aseptic technique and infection‑prevention principles
  • identify indications, contraindications, and complications
  • escalate concerns appropriately and document accurately
  • practice within NMBA scope, local policy, and legal frameworks

Our experienced instructor is a registered nurse with a proven track record in clinical practice and education. They possess the knowledge and skills to deliver clear, concise, and practical training.

Participants are required to wear scrubs or modest and appropriate clothing with no coverings below the elbow (short sleeves), in addition appropriate close-toed shoes. Participants are encouraged to bring safety glasses.
