Japanese Elementary 1 is suited to those who want to use simple Japanese to communicate with family and friends, with people in the workplace or for travel purposes, and for a better understanding of Japanese people through cultural insights and intercultural skills.

  • Introducing oneself and others
  • Shopping
  • Ordering food & drinks
  • Numbers
  • Greetings

The development of intercultural skills is fostered through discussions of Japanese culture and customs.

By the end of this course students should be able to:

  • Introduce themselves and others;
  • Exchange information about work and nationality;
  • Count and use numbers;
  • Ask how much something is and purchase it;
  • Order food and drinks in a restaurant;
  • Understand basic Japanese etiquette for conducting oneself in the above situations;
  • Recognise the difference between the three Japanese scripts and understand when they are used;
  • Have an understanding and appreciation of the values and customs of Japanese people both in daily and business situations.
  • Read Hiragana alphabets
