Course Summary

German Elementary 2 is a continuation course that focuses on building on the basic grammatical knowledge and key language skills (speaking, writing, reading, and listening) that students acquired in German Elementary 1. The course’s concentration on communication skills allows the students to gain a more complex understanding of German language and culture. The course suits learners who have studied German before, who would like to improve their competence in the language and gain more detailed insights into the culture and customs of German-speaking countries.

This 18-hour course focuses on active competences such as speaking and writing and passive abilities like listening and speaking so that students will be able to understand, communicate and write competently on everyday topics, such as: 

  • The home and different ways of life
  • Objects ine the home enviroment 
  • Daily routines and schedules
  • Time and appointments
  • The art of conversation in private and public contexts such as in business or among friends
  • Presenting information about oneself in different ways such as in short spoken or written dialogues and the ability to listen to introductions for specific information
  • Discerning more intricate phrases and meaning in written and spoken language

By the end of the course, students should have: 

  • A basic understanding of grammar and phrases so they can communicate and write about aspects of their lives in the present tense and present themselves to others
  • An understanding of German sentence structure, its basic order system, the concept of case and specific forms of location and destination and orientation
  • A basic understanding of German life and customs and how to navigate daily life activities in the country

German: Elementary 1, or equivalent (approx. 22 hours of study).
