Course Summary

learn how to create a 3D model in Autodesk Maya, with all visual content provided. You’ll be guided through every stage of the process—from starting a new project to producing a final rendered image—while exploring a range of techniques throughout the creation workflow.

An optional follow-up course, Texturing in Autodesk Maya, further covers UV mapping, texturing, lighting, and composition for 3D models.

Note: This course focuses on the 3D modelling process and does not include UV mapping or texturing.

  • Introduction to the Autodesk Maya Interface and Tools
  • Navigating in a 3D Space
  • Create a New Project
  • Move / Rotate / Scale
  • Setting up Image Planes
  • Blocking Modelling
  • High-Quality 3D Topology
  • Edge-Loops
  • Extrusion Tools
  • Applying Shaders
  • Ambient Occlusion / Wireframe
  • Render Settings (Arnold)
  • Exporting Images

By the end of this course, you’ll have the skills and knowledge to:

  • Start New 3D Modelling Projects
  • Setup Image Planes for 3D Model Creation
  • Create Industry Quality 3D Topology
  • Render Wireframe Images to Showcase your work
  • Export Rendered Images

Please note that while this class is suitable for beginners to Autodesk Maya, you will require basic computer skills. This includes using a keyboard and mouse (such as right-click contextual functions) and being able to navigate confidently within either a macOS or Windows environment. A three-button mouse (with a clickable scroll wheel as the third button) is also required.
This course does not cover these basic computer skills.

All software and visual assets will be provided.

Please bring a USB stick or portable hard drive to back up your work between classes, or alternatively use a cloud storage service such as Google Drive, OneDrive, or similar.

While optional, it is recommended that you bring a notepad and pens for note-taking or sketching ideas.

This course is suitable for those interested in 3D modelling for video game development, visual effects (VFX), or 3D animation, and who would like to develop their modelling skills.

It is also ideal for 3D modellers who use other software and want to expand their skills and knowledge by adding Autodesk Maya to their portfolio.

Designed for beginners, this course is perfect for anyone with an interest in learning the fundamentals of Autodesk Maya, guiding you through the process of creating a complete 3D model—from initial concept through to a final rendered image that demonstrates industry-quality topology.
