Marcia Walsh has worked in Melbourne’s vibrant and eclectic fashion industry over the past 30 years. Her experience includes, bespoke bridal and evening wear, bespoke tailoring, bias cut garments and corsetry. She also has experience in commercial production in these areas. Her love of the fashion industry has led her to share her knowledge through teaching patternmaking, grading, garment construction and fitting techniques.

Pre-course work:

Choose a commercial pattern that you would like to use for your Retro Dress. The design of your Retro Dress is your personal choice, anything from:

(i) a fitted bodice, with sleeves or sleeveless, centre front button through style dress with a full skirt

(ii) a halter neck dress with fitted bodice, zip, and full skirt or

(iii) a Mod shift style dress.

Check pattern measurements against your body measurements for correct size, cut paper pattern and have it ready to lay onto your fashion fabric for cutting.

Purchase fashion fabric following recommended fabric estimate on pattern. (Take care to follow correct fabric width when checking fabric estimate)

What to bring:

CAE will provide general sewing equipment but feel free bring your own sewing kit if you prefer.Your sewing kit may include some or all of the following:

  • tape measure 
  • 1 packet of long, fine glass headed pins 
  • fabric scissors
  • thread snippers  
  • quick unpick/seam ripper
  • 1 packet of Schmetz universal no. 12/ 80 sewing machine needles
  • 2 metal bobbins for Bernina sewing machine (must be specifically for Bernina machines as other bobbins are not compatible)
  • commercial pattern
  • fashion fabric
  • thread – Gutterman brand poly/cotton recommended (colour to match your fashion fabric)
  • buttons, press studs, hooks and eyes, belt buckle (only bring the items that are required for your dress) Check these items on your pattern information list
