Course Summary

Indigo is one of the oldest and most magical of all the natural dyes. This workshop focuses on powdered indigo and setting up two vats – fermentation and fructose using non-chemical and environmentally friendly techniques.

This workshop will explain the unique chemistry of indigo, principles of setting up and caring for a vat, as well as choice and preparation of the textile to be dyed. This workshop will include an introduction to Shibori resist patterning techniques which are suitable for use with indigo. Expect to dye several pieces – one scarf length and smaller samples.

There is no prerequisite for enrolling in this class.

Additional items you are required to bring to this workshop:


• Plastic Gloves, protective/old clothing, old towel

• Sewing needles (one with a larger eye) and unbreakable sewing thread

• Erasable pen or lead pencil

• 1 ball cotton or file string for wrapping. (Upholstery thread or warping cotton, polyester, string, raffia or crochet thread)

• Masking tape

• Scissors and quick unpick

• 1 plumbing pipe approx 10cm diam and any length up to 1m. Offcuts are ok.

• Plastic bags for taking home wet fabric

• Small clamps for Itajime –  Paperclips/wooden shapes e.g. a few clothes pegs

• You may also bring your own fabrics if you wish, different silks, fine wool, scoured cottons

• Notebook and pen
