Course Summary

Learn how to create a portrait study with a believable likeness using the beautiful medium of pastel, ideal for capturing the soft bloom of skin tones.  Artist Janet Hayes will show you the basics of portraiture- composition, drawing, tone, colour and technique. Working from life or your own reference photo, to create a portrait, Janet will demonstrate a pastel portrait which you can follow along with step by step on your own artwork.

Learn how to create a portrait study with a believable likeness using the beautiful medium of pastel which is ideal for capturing the soft bloom of skin tones. Janet will show you the basics of portraiture- composition, drawing, tone, colour and technique. Working from life or your own reference photo, to create a portrait, Janet will demonstrate a pastel portrait which you can follow along with step by step on your own artwork. She will guide you through this challenging subject to create a finished portrait.

The second session will continue the pose so that more finish can be achieved or a fresh start from a different angle can be worked on. Create in soft pastel using a 
limited palette or full colour. Suits all levels of ability.

Please bring the following materials to class:

Pastel Portraiture Course materials list
• Backing Board- Foamcore (from art stores) can be cut to size with a Stanley knife or cutter 52x66cm (some backing boards will be available but having your own is preferable) 
• 4 large fold back or bulldog clips 10 sheets of ‘butcher’s’ or ‘bulky news’ drawing paper for padding underneath pastel paper and sketches (from art stores)
• 2 sheets of Canson Mi-tientes pastel paper 50x64cm, mid grey colours or Canson MiTex in mid greys
• 1 medium stick of soft willow or vine charcoal 
• Limited palette of artists soft pastels or an assorted set of Soft Pastels. 

A more detailed list of pastel colours will be provided closer to the course start date.
