An excellent introduction to machine sewing and making your own clothes with ease. Gain confidence in sewing and develop skills in garment construction and finishing techniques, whilst making a simple pair of pants. Includes machine set up and use, reading patterns and fabric suitability. Taught on user friendly domestic sewing machines in the CAE sewing studio.

This course will help you to gain confidence in sewing whilst you practice on a calico sampler and make a simple garment (such as a simple pair of pants – with simple elastic or drawstring waist) and develop skills such as:

– Sewing machine set up and use
– How to read and understand a commercial sewing pattern
– A range of garment construction and finishing techniques

Machine Sewing: Beginners

During this course you will learn how to set up and use a domestic sewing machine as well as how to read a commercial pattern and understand the construction procedure sheet and materials requirements.

Students practice on a calico sampler and then make a simple garment. It is anticipated that students will complete at least one garment, if time permits they can go on to practice buttonhole and other seam finishing techniques.

Materials required for this course:

Pen and paper
1 reel of Gutterman brand polyester thread for general sewing
1 packet of Klasse or Schmetz brand universal size 12/80 sewing machine needles
2 metal Bernina brand bobbins
Measuring tape
1 packet of long fine glass headed pins
1 packet multi-coloured tailors chalk
1 quick unpick
1 pair paper cutting scissors

Students will be advised in first class about the purchase of suitable dressmakers scissors, patterns and fabrics required for class project. These additional items will be required for the second class.

This course is suitable for students who have no prior sewing experience.
