Course Summary

The content of the course covers routine speaking, listening, reading, writing skills which focus on vocational and applied language used by employees, their customers and clients.  The course content has also been selected to suit prospective travellers and people wanting to interact socially with the Italian-speaking community in Melbourne or in other countries. The course is presented in an accessible and non-threatening way and opportunities are constantly provided to communicate in Italian.  Cross-cultural understanding is an important aspect of the course.

The course covers the following  topics and functional skills:

  • The changing face of families in Australia and Italy
  • Traditions and customs in Italy
  • Exchanging opinions about the present and the past
  • Describing things, people and places
  • Giving and asking for directions

Problem solving relating to travel arrangements

By the end of this course students should be able to:

  • Use the telephone to obtain and give information relating to a range of situations including exchanging information about their Italian classes and making travel arrangements;
  • Negotiate a routine, problematic spoken exchanges in a wide range of situations including those relating to travel and general interests;

Ask for, and give directions orally, in situations which mainly pertain to getting around on an everyday basis, as well as more specific travel for tourism purposes.

Italian Intermediate 4 or equivalent of about 200 hours of study.

Suitable for students who would like to further strengthen their knowledge of the language.

Practice makes perfect in acquiring any new skills. CAE language teachers provide many opportunities in class for conversation practice to build fluency and confidence.

Students are encouraged to participate in class activities, furthering skills in both speaking and listening. It is highly recommended that they devote at least 2 hours per week to study outside class time.

 Students are also encouraged to read, listen to radio programs and watch TV programs in the language whenever possible.
