Course Summary

A solid introduction to the language and culture of India. This is a comprehensive course preparing students to use simple Hindi with confidence in everyday situations. It is competency based. In addition to speaking, listening, reading and writing skills students are also taught the essentials of grammar.

The course covers the fundamentals of grammar, reading and writing Hindi. In addition to greetings and social etiquette, the Hindi writing system and pronunciation are also covered.

By the end of this course students should be able to:

  • read and write Hindi script;
  • introduce themselves, family members and others and use basic expressions for meeting, greeting and saying goodbye;
  • ask simple questions;
  • use personal pronouns, some nouns and adjectives;
  • say and ask what you and others do;
  • ask someone’s address;
  • use adjectives, simple present tense and plural forms. 

The topics and learning outcomes may vary slightly from group to group according to learner needs.
