Course Summary

From the earliest movies, filmmakers have frequently turned to the classics of literature for subject material. Have their results been pillage, faithful recreation, sterile imitations or original, valuable works in their own right? This course will consider a range of film adaptions – good, bad and ugly, focusing on works from English, French and Russian classic literature, such Jane Austen and Charles Dickens, Gustave Flaubert, and Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. Are there really ways of successfully adapting literature to Cinema? Do we have different, perhaps unjustified, expectations of adaptations?

It’s a popular argument or discussion over a coffee or wine – did the film do justice to the book? For some it is critical to the films success and their enjoyment, while for others it simply doesn’t matter. Join experienced movie tutor, Peter Hourigan for what should be an informative series.
