Course Summary

Learn how to design and create your own fashion designs, gaining inspiration from a range of sources. Be introduced to different fabrics and how to design them into appropriately fabulous garments. Create working sketches and technical specifications.

In this course you will learn about:

  • Different fabrics – knits and weaves and what fabrics work best for what styles
  • Where to find inspiration to create your design ideas
  • Learn about the basics of drawing that can be applied to creating a garment
  • Learn how to create technical drawings that include specifications that are required for pattern making

You will learn the techniques to design your own clothes and create sketches to take your ideas up to the patternmaking stage. The tutor will discuss what are suitable fabrics and what are correct design elements that will bring your ideas to life. This information will be used to create working sketches with specifications that can then be used to create a garment pattern.

Students will be required to bring to the first class:

  • Magazines and/or books with fashion ideas
  • A range of different fabric swatches
  • Paper cutting scissors
  • Glue
  • Coloured and graphite drawing pencils
  • Eraser
  • A3 drawing pad

Any notification of class cancellation will be advised within 48 hours, therefore you may prefer to wait and purchase your materials until the couple of days before the scheduled start day. All efforts are made to ensure that courses proceed so that cancellation and disappointment is avoided.

This course is suitable for students who are interested in fashion design, garment construction and fashion drawing and who want to work on some folio preparation.
