Course Summary

Dutch Elementary 1 is an 18 hour course designed for beginners who wish to learn to speak, read and understand basic Dutch used in everyday situations.

This course gives a solid introduction to the language and culture of the Netherlands. It will prepare students to use simple Dutch with assurance in everyday situations. Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are taught and the essentials of grammar will be introduced.

Understands and communicates any important information both in writing and orally.

Advanced: 1 – 4

This course focuses on speaking and listening, so you can communicate effectively on everyday topics, such as:

  • meeting people
  • shopping
  • food and drink
  • interests
  • likes and dislikes
  • greetings and introductions
  • family
  • home life
  • small talk over coffee

Grammar explanations are integrated with oral and written activities.

By the end of this course students should be able to:

  • greet people and introduce themselves with confidence;
  • engage in simple conversations and exchange personal information such as name, nationality, address, telephone number;
  • talk about themselves and their families;
  • write personal details: name, nationality, date and place of birth;
  • order drinks and food in a restaurant;
  • read a short dialogue;
  • use simple Dutch to entertain guests;
  • small talk over coffee;
  • have an understanding and appreciation of the values and customs of Dutch-speaking communities.

The topics and learning outcomes may vary slightly from group to group according to learner needs.

No previous experience is required for this course

Upon successful completion of this course students are both eligible and encouraged to continue by enrolling in Dutch Elementary 2.
