Course Summary

An introduction to modern calligraphy, influenced by both the copperplate and italic scripts using brush marker pens.

Learn how to write basic letterforms and then how to relax the style to create your own quirky modern letters. Discover a variety of techniques to blend colours to create beautiful decorative effects and ornaments.

Calligraphy Artis Lauchean Duncan

Lauchean Duncan is a practicing commercial calligrapher, lettering artist and teacher with 28 years studio experience as The Graphic Quill. She has studied overseas and in Australia with Master Scribes from the United Kingdom, the USA, Belgium, Germany, France and Australia.

Lauchean initially trained at the College of Decoration, first developing pen and brush skills in the early 80’s and strating her teaching in the mid 1980’s throughout Melbourne and across Victoria.

Drawing on knowledge from both traditional and contemporary techniques, the tools of the “Scribe”. Lauchean is excited by what she sees as the evolving of the art of calligraphy as a modern art in an ever changing technological world.

Lauchean firmly believes that to teach is to learn twice. She takes great pleasure in watching her student’s skills grow and delights in seeing them blossom and develop with their achievements.

Suitable for the beginner and those with previous lettering experience this calligraphy course is delivered through a combination of demonstration and individual instruction.

Learn how to use a range brush pens through pressure and release methods and a variety of fundamental brush holds.

Learn the basic letter forms and how to create these step by step, and then how to relax the style to develop your own quirky modern brush lettering. Design a word in a little flourished ornament as a simple composition.

Students will use modern pens with an introduction to the traditional tools and materials of the art/trade and how to use those.

Japanese – Touch Pen the one with the glittery barrel and Cap

OR

Faber – Castell – Pitt Artist pen B for Broad

2 x Tombow ABT – double ended Brush pen (two different colours)

OR

Ecoline Brush pen in two different colours.

Cartridge Paper A3 Or A3 Reflex Ultra white

Pencil HB

Ruler

Other materials required will be advised throughout the course.
