Course overview
Community Services Work is an entry level course which aims to provide students with general skills and
an overview of community services specific skills. Areas included are youth work, poverty and related issues
such as homelessness, alcohol and other drugs, mental health, family violence and disability. There is a four week
practical placement component to this course.
Employment Opportunities
Employment opportunities in the Community Services field are diverse and include youth work, community
development, alcohol and other drugs, welfare work and social work. Students completing this course often
go on to obtain further qualifications in the specific field of their choice.
Is this course for me?
This course is designed to give students a broad overview of employment in the community services field,
and provide an opportunity to explore options for finding a focus in the field. A practical placement is part
of the course.

Workplace Learning
To complement the theoretical components covered in class, learners are required to successfully complete a
work placement. This placement provides a great opportunity to practically apply the theory learnt in real
life work settings and assess your skills.
How do I apply for the course?
To be selected into this course it is essential that you attend the information session and informal
group interview (both held at the same time). Please be aware the session will take two hours and you
must attend for the whole time.
The information session will provide all details of course content, assessment requirements, workplace learning,
career pathways and general requirements of the course. The selection process requires you to complete a short
written task and participate in a relaxed and informal group interview.
It is important to contact us and register your attendance.
What is the selection criteria for this course?
Selection into the course will be based on the following criteria:
- Commitment to undertaking all course requirements
- Demonstrated interest in learning
- Ability to interact appropriately within a group setting
- Security check through Victoria Police
After the selection process you will be notified of the outcome of your application.
You will then be informed when to come in and pay your enrolment fee.
