A HISTORY OF DRY STONE WALLS: FROM SETTLEMENT TO CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPING

It’s fascinating how the use of simple stone structures played such a critical part in Australia’s early settlement and much survives to this day. Raelene Marshall explores how their use – stones cleared for settlement in harsh terrain or the frenzied search for gold, subsequent creation of terrace walls, buildings for both residences and farming; the sophisticated eel catching dry stone aquaculture systems built by Indigenous people. Subsequently, dry stone walls became a feature of Edna Walling, one of Australia’s most influential landscape designers. Raelene discusses the history, significant local sites, styles, conservation issues and contemporary use from landscaping to sculptural triumphs

Jewish & Italians communities arrived; creating many businesses. It remains one of the most important Italian areas and is a most lively and cosmopolitan suburb. It was a highly desirable location with superb row housing constructed by French consuls and other prosperous personalities. Music professors like Zelman, artists McCubbin, Roberts, Bouvelot, and writers such as Mrs Aeneas Gunn had connections with Carlton. We pass Medley Hall, the Trades Hall and Exhibition Building, site of scoundrel Squizzy Taylors demise.
