Day 1: 

  • Overview of the editing process from structural editing to copy editing to proofreading.
  • Introduction to the Structural Editing Process: developing a strong internal structure for documents. This includes transitional devices and signposts for ensuring a cohesive and clear progression of discourse.
  • Practical Assignments: learning and applying the analytical skills required to create a structurally sound document.

Day 2: 

  • Introduction to the copy editing process: developing clear, meaningful and readable documents for effective communication. This includes identifying common grammatical and punctuation errors.
  • Practical Assignments: learning and applying the analytical and intuitive skills required to make any writing clear, concise and compelling to read.
  • Introduction to proofreading: provided with the proof reader’s check list.

By the end of the course you will have learned:

  • The differences between the three steps of the editing process.
  • Common document structures and factors influencing structure choice.
  • How to improve structure with sections, paragraphs, transitions and signposting.
  • How to identify and correct common grammatical and punctuation errors.
  • How to identify and correct common errors in writing.
  • How to clarify ambiguous, misleading or unclear sentences.
  • How to ensure the reader easily understands the text
  • How to ensure effective communication by anticipating reader response.
  • Learn the fundamentals of proofreading with a checklist.

Nicolas Di Tempora is a unique combination of professional copywriter / editor and qualified educator, working with a diverse range commercial, government, academic, social and not-for-profit organisations.

His professional track record includes twenty years in leading-edge advertising agencies (JWT Worldwide, DDB and Saatchi & Saatchi) as an award winning copywriter and art director. His next phase was as Creative Director of his own agency, The Di Tempora Group. He is also the author of Copywriting in Action, the highly acclaimed book on professional writing in all media.

Today, he divides his professional commitments between freelancing writing, editing and delivering professional development courses for professional communicators. His PD programs have earned a reputation among marketing and communications practitioners as the PD program of choice.

His qualifications include BA (English Literature & History), Monash University; Dip Ed (Humanities), Monash University; and Advanced Diploma Professional Screenwriting (Film, Television & Digital Media), RMIT; Certificate IV Training & Assessment, CAE and Swinburne University. He is a member of Writers Victoria and Editors Victoria.

Please bring a pen and paper along to both sessions, or your laptop if you prefer.

You’re also welcome to bring a short sample of writing to workshop in class (time permitting).
