Students will learn to make linocuts at CAE printmaking studios, gaining inspiration from Margaret Preston’s modernist use of the medium, her subject matter and techniques. There will be discussion of a range of contemporary and traditional linocut artists and techniques throughout the course. Exploring studio-based art skills and working creatively within a team, students will specialise in this simple, direct and powerful medium to produce a body of finished limited edition prints.

On completion of this course, students will thoroughly understand relief printmaking and linocuts, block preparation, carving, inking and paper handling. They will complete two small and one medium trial, with an edition of eight to ten prints, and be able to continue to print at home after the course with or without a press. They will also appreciate the practice of printmaker Margaret Preston and her place in Australian contemporary art.
