Course Summary

An understanding of Latin and its literature is important for an appreciation of European culture. In this beginners’ course, students learn to read Latin and find their way into the history and culture of Ancient Rome. It covers the basics of Latin grammar and vocabulary. The emphasis is on reading Latin.

Students learn to read and translate simple Latin text from the Oxford Latin Course: Student’s Book Part 1; learn the forms of three cases of the Latin nouns and the forms of Latin verbs in the present, imperfect and perfect tenses, and the indicative active. Opportunities are provided to students to compose their own Latin sentences using the grammar they have learned. There is considerable discussion of aspects of Roman history and culture.

 

By the end of the course students will be able to:

  • read and translate simple Latin text;
  • compose simple Latin sentences.

There are no prerequisites for this course and it is suitable for complete beginners.
