Korean Elementary 1 is suited to those who want to use simple Korean to communicate with family and friends, with people in the workplace, for travel purposes and for a better understanding of Korean people through cultural insights and intercultural skills.

In this course students will be covering:

  • Greetings: Expressions for greeting and farewelling will be introduced with appropriate body language and etiquette. These include introducing oneself and others
  • Shopping: Sino-Korean numbers, basic expressions for purchasing and bargaining for goods
  • Food and drink: ordering drinks, basic expressions for dishes and for thanking and refusing a meal
  • The Korean alphabet, Hangul, consonants and vowels, syllables
  • Travelling: telling the time and asking for locations
  • Family, including the Korean family structure

The course will not focus on formal grammar teaching. However, basic sentence patterns and word order in Korean will be introduced.

By the end of this course students should be able to:

  • introduce themselves and others and use basic expressions for meeting, greeting and farewelling;
  • engage in simple conversations and exchange information about families, work, occupations;
  • be familiar with the Korean alphabet;
  • do shopping;
  • order food and drinks in a restaurant;
  • read a short dialogue;
  • have an understanding and appreciation of the values and customs of Korean people.
