Course Summary

German Elementary 3 is a continuation course focusing on the deepening of basic grammatical knowledge and meaning-making skills (speaking, writing, reading, and listening) students have acquired previously. The course provides with a communicative approach the next level towards a more complex understanding of German language and culture. The course suits learner who have studied German before and who would like to become more competent in the language and gain more detailed insights into the culture and customs of German-speaking countries.

This 18-hour course focuses on active competences such as speaking and writing and passive abilities like listening and speaking so that students will be able to understand detailed aspects of and communicate and write competently on everyday topics, such as: 

  • Jobs and Professions and talking about aspects of one’s working life
  • Daily routine and activities in a variety of social and cultural settings
  • Professional forms of introduction in business environments
  • Asking for directions and narrating past events during vacation
  • Discuss and talk about statistics and charts with moderate complexity
  • Writing different items like postcards and reports
  • Reasonably complex use of simple past forms of certain verbs
  • Exposure to more complex forms of word order and modal verbs

By the end of the course, students should have: 

  • An understanding of grammar and phrases so they can communicate and write about present and past events in an ordered fashion
  • A good idea of different forms of introductions in German culture and appropriate behaviours in different social contexts
  • A reasonably complex idea of German living and customs in the country
  • Mastered the dual-structured verb bracket in German

German: Elementary 2, or equivalent (approx. 36 hours of study).
