Course Summary

French: Elementary 1 is an 18 hour course designed for beginners who wish to learn to speak, read, write and understand basic French used in everyday situations.

This course covers general topics such as:

  • Greetings; Introductions; Alphabet & spelling; Numbers
  • Personal information (e.g. nationality, work, likes/dislikes)
  • Gender of nouns and adjectives: masculine/feminine
  • Formal/informal French (e.g. tu vs vous)
  • Conjugation of simple verbs in the present tense
  • Ongoing pronunciation practice.

By the end of this course students should be able to:

  • greet people and introduce themselves and others with confidence
  • engage in simple conversations and exchange personal information about their names, nationality, addresses, telephone numbers
  • talk about themselves
  • read a short dialogue
  • express likes and dislikes, interests and hobbies
  • count to 1,000
  • use the present tense of some verbs
  • write a post card and a short email
  • have some knowledge of the French-speaking countries.

No prior knowledge of French required.
