Course Summary

Take control of your camera.

You will learn to better understand the features and creative possibilities of your Digital SLR camera under the guidance of an expert professional photographer. The course combines both classroom-based learning and practical shooting opportunities; the latter inspired by Melbourne’s nearby iconic coffee precinct.

Content:

The emphasis is hands-on learning, allowing you to master your camera’s settings and modes by drawing on professional camera techniques. You will gain an understanding of the basic principles of good photography and how to apply to your shooting.

The following topics are covered during the course:

  • An overview of your camera including reading and understanding the settings window.
  • How to set up your camera for general use, and aperture mode.
  • Composition, lens perspective, handling and framing.
  • Correctly focusing the camera.
  • Light and how it relates to exposure.
  • Aperture, shutter speeds and ISO.
  • Colour management.
  • Using the camera’s review windows.
  • Flash use and light metering.
  • The various exposure modes: what’s useful?

Outcomes:

By the end of the course, not only will you have gained confidence in using your SLR but will also be able to:

  • Customise camera settings
  • Operate the camera in various modes (aperture, shutter speed or manual)
  • Capture Images that have impact and are well exposed.
  • Control depth of field (sharpness over a range of distance).
  • Control perspective (relationship between background and foreground)
  • Optimise images for print or the web

What to bring:

Please bring along your own Digital SLR to class, along with a notebook and pen. Ensure your camera batteries are fully charged, and there’s plenty of room on your memory card (preferably have it empty).

Please also bring along any relevant cables that go along with the camera, and the instructional manual if you have it.

Intended audience:

This class is perfect for beginners to DLSR photography, people who have previously used film based analogue cameras and have upgraded or those who have upgraded from a compact camera.

If you already own a Digital SLR but are only using it as a point and shoot, this class will be perfect.

** Please note – this class is also suitable for mirrorless and micro four thirds cameras. If you are unsure whether your camera is suitable, please feel welcome to call us on 9652 0611
