Get your hands dirty!
This is a great class for anyone wanting to make a start with clay. We cover simple techniques for making functional and decorative pieces. It’s also a great start to confidently learn how to create and apply your own style of decoration. All materials including glazes are included in course fee.
This course is a comprehensive introduction to the foundation skills and techniques used in studio ceramics. Using terracotta clay and earthenware decorating and glazing materials, students are taken through a range of hands on exercises to develop foundation skills. Students will gain an overall understanding of the ceramic process and gain confidence in how to work with clay. This includes technical information from which to build a good foundation of techniques to enjoy the processes of working with clay.
During the course you will learn about:
- The fundamentals of the ceramic process – make, fire, decorate, glaze, fire.
- Pinch pots & Coil pots.
- Simple slab plates.
- Creating simple patterns for decorations and then applying them.
- The firing processes.
- Applying glaze
- Terracotta clay
- Earthenware slip/engobe
- Earthenware glaze
What to bring:
Please bring to first class an old towel, apron or old clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, drycleaning plastic or large garbage bags to cover your work, any clay modelling tools or synthetic paint brushes you may have (not essential). Clay and glazes are provided.
This course is suitable for students with no previous experience using clay.
Continuing students, who have done the course previously or have prior ceramics experience are also welcome to join the class to further their skills and knowledge by working on their own projects, with some guidance from the teacher.
